Redmond has made great strides in the computing security space these past few years, and its solutions now lead the industry in many aspects. Microsoft Defender for Business intends to do the same.
This new platform just hit general availability, and is now set to boost security of small and medium businesses that deploy it.
The software titan made things official, revealing that one in four SMBs have experienced a security breach in the past year due to the missing out on proper software to protect their devices. And unlike large enterprises, these organizations lack the necessary resources to protect themselves.
Enter Microsoft Defender for Business, which is an all-in-one solution to provide customers with enterprise-grade endpoint security.
This involves abilities like traditional antivirus protection against malware to defense against modern and evolving threats like ransomware. Solid detection and response capabilities are also part of this new package.
Microsoft explains:
“With Defender for Business, SMBs get multilayered protection, detection and response, spanning the five phases of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) cybersecurity framework — identify, protect, detect, respond and recover — to protect and remediate against known and unknown threats.
Defender for Business comes with built-in policies to get customers up and running quickly. The automated investigation and remediation capabilities in Defender for Business help automate the type of work handled by dedicated SecOps teams, by continuously detecting and automatically remediating various threats.”

Compared to the version of Microsoft Defender that everyone is familiar with, the one that comes bundled with Windows, this new variant aimed at SMBs does not come with a free license. Companies will have to fork $3 per user, per month if they want to buy it standalone.
It is also part of the Microsoft 365 Business Premium plan in case you want to go that route.
